This week’s prayer is full of good theology in just a couple of short sentences:
Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts;
for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength,
so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
(Book of Common Prayer)
Sometimes it’s hard to trust God. When the future seems uncertain, or when circumstances are overwhelming, or when the way is unclear, it’s difficult to put down our anxieties and rest in God’s strength.
Harder still is learning to trust God when “we got this!” It’s the times that we have things figured out, when we are confident we are strong enough, when we are sure we deserve that next thing....well, that’s when it’s easy to forget God. All our focus is on our own abilities. That’s when we let our pride get the best of us.
How can we boast in God’s mercy? How can we keep a humble heart? I think the answer is found right here in this prayer: by simply asking Him.
Lord, help us to trust in You with all our hearts.
Humility is the posture that recognizes God as the source of all things. He provides, sustains, and fulfills us.
He gives us strength for each day, for each challenge, for each difficulty, and each success.
His presence is always with us, and He will never let us go.
Now, THAT’S mercy we can boast about!
I’m praying for you this week,
Rachel
