Grayson.
Why did you have to come home from college for the summer and make me get all used to having you around again? Why did you have to watch Monsters University and The Emperor's New Groove and Super 8 and Longmire, seasons 1 and 2, with me and make me remember how much fun we have together? I'd nearly forgotten how you make me laugh with just an expression, or a well-timed quote from Nacho Libre, or a joke about bodily functions.
I almost forgot how much I love to see you sleeping in your bed, and then waking up with bed-head hair and those sweet blue eyes. I put your dimples out of my mind - the way they crease your cheeks when you smile - and how they remind me of your three year-old self and the mischief you used to get into.
Darn you, kid.
Now you're leaving for another year of college and I'm sad all over again at the thought of saying goodbye. I hope you know what you've done to your mother.
You became a young man with a heart for God. You stand on your own two feet and know how to question and where to find answers. You live your faith quietly, confidently, authentically. You are far beyond your 19 years.
You are more than I ever could have asked for in a son, and I'm so very honored to be your mom.
I will miss you, Gray.
But just to be clear, I'm not crying. I've been cutting onions.
Love,
Mom
