This lovely old painting instructs sailors what to do in case of a terrible storm: throw out the anchors, jettison heavy objects like cannons, and pray to their Savior for help.
I remember the word "jettison" as a vocabulary word in elementary school. Since then, I've been disappointed to find that there are few opportunities to work such an excellent word into everyday conversation.
"Son, please jettison your backpack to your room, not the kitchen table."
"Allow me to jettison my work attire before working in the yard."
Jettison means to "throw overboard, discard something as useless or a burden." Basically, to chuck stuff out that's weighing you down.
Today's Small Thing is to experience the joy of the jettison!
Oh, honey. We're going to get rid of some junk.
What's been weighing you down? Burdening you? Impairing your function?
- Clothing that no longer fits, or is torn, stained or is completely unfashionable
- Toys your children no longer play with
- Kitchen clutter
- Holey underwear
- Junk in your car that makes you cringe every time you get in
- Attitudes of bitterness, anger or resentment
- Feelings of despair, hopelessness and general malaise
Take a trash bag and gather up some things that are no longer useful or necessary, and jettison them to the dumpster. Gather up your thoughts of fear and failure, and decide to let them go today. Perhaps a moment on your knees will help you jettison the attitudes that keep you from moving toward victory.
POINTS: 40 for jettisoning any item or attitude of your choice today! Sail away to freedom.
What will you jettison today?
