I hope you all had wonderful Christmas and New Year celebrations! Our decorations are still up and the trees are crispy, but the holidays were memorable to say the least!
Before I got sidetracked with a little thing like finding out I'm having a baby, I had planned to unveil a new Home Sanctuary blog design and really WOW you with a fabulous new look. But while I continue to work on that scene, we'll just have to limp by on what we've got. (Note my lame, blurry correction to the "Small Thing logo.") It will give us all something to look forward to, right?
I had some time to think about my goals and "resolutions" for 2009 yesterday. But every time I started to write a list, I could feel myself powering down. It's as if making a list of "Must Do's" sucked all the life force right out of me.
Strange.
But perhaps not so strange, after all. Now that I think about it, my resolutions last all of about a week, and then I'm right back to hitting the snooze instead of having morning devotions, eating brownies like there's no tomorrow and walking to the fridge instead of going for a power walk.
I think I'm tired of setting myself up for failure.
But the saying, "If you aim at nothing, you'll hit it every time" is ringing in my head. I know that if I set NO goals at all, I'll be wallowing in my mediocrity until this time next year. And I don't think I want to wallow, unless it could be in some chocolate.
So I've decided to limit my resolutions to just one. And if you are tired of failing at your own resolutions, I invite you to join me in the One Thing for 2009 that will make all the difference in the world. We could call it The Company Girl Resolution!
Here it is:
I resolve to do one "extra" thing each day.
See, I'm not one of those people who springs out of bed, chomping at the bit to get things done. I wasn't blessed with boundless energy to cross things off my list. I tend to take items on today's list and move them to the "I'll do this tomorrow" list.......and well, you know how THAT goes. So by taking on a "one extra thing" attitude, I will give myself permission to not have to get EVERYTHING done......but just one more thing than I thought I could do.
This might look like: putting away a dish, rather than leaving it to dry in the rack. Or hanging my purse on a hook instead of chucking it on the floor when I walk through the door. It could be putting my clothes in the closet instead of leaving them in a pile on the bed. It could be eating something healthy or even reading a verse or two before I turn out the light. I'm amazed at how doing "one extra thing" can make me feel on top of the world. It's like a drug, I tell you!
Some days, my "one extra thing" might be Today's Small Thing from right here at Home Sanctuary. The Small Things are simple and easy, quick and sometimes silly. Just the kind of "extra" thing I might be able to swing in a day. But the point is really about the kind of attitude I want to have: challenging myself to take one teeny tiny step each day will kick mediocrity in the butt and give me confidence to set bigger goals.
Wanna join me? Great! I'll give you points for simply considering doing "one extra thing" each day. Start by doing one extra thing TODAY and see how it makes you feel. But be careful, because doing one thing can lead to doing two things.....and you wanna take this slow. Slow and steady wins the race.
POINTS: 50 for doing one "extra" thing today and considering the Company Girl Resolution!
BONUS POINTS: 20 for sharing your extra thing in comments. Feel free to leave a link to your blog if you want to blog about your exploit. Big or small, each "extra" is a victory!
