That's what we have here in Texas, and alot of them! That's Southern for "poor soils," and it must be said slowly and with a shake of the head. Just for grins, say it out loud in your best Texas twang, and add "Yep, that's what we got in these here parts!" (Spitting afterward is optional.)
In this area, we are "blessed" with deep, dark clay soil, which sticks together like gumbo when wet and then cracks into deep fissures when dry. We are also "blessed" with a crumbly white rock, called caliche, which wreaks havoc with foundations and is horrible for planting anything in. Everything is made that much worse with the current drought we are experiencing. It's really at a crisis level.
Yesterday, we noticed new cracks in our concrete porch. Have they been there all along and we never noticed, or are they brand new? Whatever the case, it seems like there are more, and bigger ones, than there have ever been.
It struck me suddenly how my own personal cracks are more visible when I'm in the middle of hard times, drought if you will. I like to think of them as "ISSUES," but the reality is that they are the little sins that erode my foundation in Christ. I struggle with fear, bitterness, discontentment, anger, and hey, that's just with my own family! I'm ashamed at all the things I pass over everyday, and not even notice they are there!
Foundation and soil experts tell us that we need to take care of our home's structure by regularly watering the foundation, to keep it from cracking. My own "pore soul" needs regular watering, too, and I've often neglected it. No wonder those cracks show up when the pressure is on!
Thankfully, the Master Builder Himself is in charge of construction, and He is watching over the foundation being laid in my life. He guarantees that that He will always do His part. The rest is up to me......to lay down my "issues," by bringing them to the cross, and leaving them there. I'm determined to take care of my foundation every day: spending time with my Builder, going over the "blueprints" in His word, and keeping the soil well-watered in prayer. I'm also....
Praying for Rain,
Rachel Anne
