Happy (early) Valentine's Day!
My daughter, Meghan, asked me what her Dad and I do for each other for Valentine's Day.
"Hmmmmm. Not much," was my answer.
My husband tends to believe that Valentine's Day is a scheme foisted upon the public by the flower, chocolate and greeting card industries and fueled by the restaurateurs. I surely don't want him to feel like a pawn in the hands of evil capitalists (wink), when he is perfectly sweet and romantic all 365 days of the year, so we've used Valentine's Day to celebrate our family with a simple dinner at home. I usually make something special, like grilled steaks, and try and come up with a dessert that everyone likes: my default brownies with ice cream and chocolate sauce drizzled over the top. The brownies can be cut with a heart shaped cookie cutter for added joy.
Sometimes we've done a "Round Robin" valentine, in which each person at the table gets a blank card with their name on it. It gets passed to the person next to them, who writes something they love about the other person. It then gets passed to the next person until it has gone all the way around. Each of us ends up with a card with a note inside from everyone in the family. Of course, the kids have to be old enough to either wield a pencil or dictate their sentiments to someone who can. But this is an easy and fun way to have something special without a lot of pre-planning. I like that.
Today's Small Thing is to simply express your love for someone special in your life. A hug, a phone call or card....maybe just an encouraging word. My guess is that you are already doing that, so this will be an EASY 40 points for you!
What will you do for Valentine's Day? Do you go all out, or is it "just another day" for you? This day makes me think of all the people I love: my husband, my kids, my parents, my friends, in-laws......and of course, my sweet Company Girls. Thank you for being part of my life each day, for taking the time to check in every now and then, and for sharing your lives with me. You make this blog a pleasure!
